OrtrudMedical

Caroline is CTO and co-founder at Ortrud Medical, a Swedish company that makes an intelligent tourniquet for intravenous access. She applies engineering principles to biology, and her background is in synthetic biology as part of the University of Edinburgh iGEM team at MIT, systems biology at the University of Oxford, and executable biology as software engineer at Microsoft Research in Cambridge. For her doctoral thesis on molecular mechanotransducers, she used Oxford super computing facilities and developed analytical software tools. In 2014, she left the UK for a Clinical Innovation Fellowship at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. Caroline actively pursues opportunities to assist technological innovation based on her background in wet, soft and hardware. Her work in academia, industry and startups has given her experience of research and product development in a variety of settings, and she is keen to promote and create environments that support work and knowledge exchange. Today, she is on the board of Stockholm Makerspace, co-organises the Sthlm Hardware meetup and has initiated the Geek Girl Startup group for Swedish women tech entrepreneurs. She mentors Uppsala and KTH medtech teams, and has spoken at both the UK launch and Swedish editions of Geek Girl Meetup as well as the 2017 Women In Technology conference in Stockholm. Encouraging kids’ tech curiosity is vital, and Caroline teaches electrical power generation to ten-year-olds and is an active member of Tekla, MakerTjej and MakerSheroes networks – great initiatives that show female tech presence and leadership by teaching.
