The current refugee crisis in Europe has laid bare the weaknesses of the European asylum and external border policies and is undermining one of Europe’s core values: the free circulation of people within its borders. This session outlines the current challenges faced by the EU and its member states, explores the human rights issues at stake, and debates the impact of current responsibility sharing arrangements within the ‘Common European Asylum System’, opening up a discussion on the way forward.
