Organized with the Graduate Studies Seminar and the NYU Provost´s Global Research Initiatives

organized by Claire Brandon
Ph.D. Candidate, The Institute of Fine Arts at New York University

This conference will bring together curators, cultural officials, scholars, and directors of museums and fondazioni to discuss the status of the Italian museum today. Discussion topics will include the fondazione system in Italy, museum administration, cultural policy, the organization of temporary exhibitions, collection building, and the role of the fashion and banking industries in contemporary art patronage. Sessions will focus on display practices for both pre-modern and contemporary art. As home to some of the oldest museums in the world, Italy’s approach to institutionalizing works of art is of international concern. With the rise of privatization in the 1990’s, museum and exhibition practice in Italy have had a fraught relationship between the public and the private. This interdisciplinary study day will consider the economic, political, cultural, and art historical concerns facing Italian museums today.
