In her talk, Human Rights, Justice and State Building in Transitional Societies, Professor Dixon explored the links between transitional law and justice tools and state building in societies transitioning to capitalism and/or democracy. The first part of her talk focused on the use of prosecution and trials as a transitional justice tool in the post-Nazi German transition; then, using the Czech Republic as a case study, she examined lustration as a transitional tool in the post-communist transition. Prof. Dixon then analyzed truth and reconciliation as an alternative transitional justice tool in the post-apartheid South African transition and, concluded by exploring the implications of her analysis for current transitions in the Middle East.
