Over the last two centuries, opera, like all cultural forms and genres in the so-called West, has actively participated in the discourse on race. This talk introduces a few particularly interesting works in this respect, addressing them both in their original historical context and in light of recent performance practices. Which notions of race did they convey back then? And how can we critically reconfigure such notions for the stage today?
